Comments

"PovoMac" was constructed to be a low cost solution for experimentation with IOS and OSX design/development and features only the bare essentials to utilise applications such as Adobe Photoshop and Apple Xcode.

"PovoMac" can be purchased and assembled for $295 AUD (excluding keyboard, monitor, mouse, and speakers). I believe this is the cheapest "Hackintosh" that has not used recycled (i.e. second hand) components and is fully compatible with OSX Lion 10.7-10.7.3. All of the components were purchased through Australian retailers, hence, the total cost may vary depending on your location.

"PovoMac" has the following functionality:

Audio: Yes!
Dual Display: Yes!
DVDRW: Yes!
Network: Yes!
Sleep Mode: Yes!
USB: Yes!
Video Acceleration: Yes! (QE/CI)

Potential Issues

Issue #1 - Dual Display Broken: This issue is a simple fix, but caused much frustration during the troubleshooting process. Basically, both monitors need to be analogue signals (i.e. VGA) or digital signals (i.e. DVI), they cannot be mixed. So the following combinations will work for the Galaxy Nvidia GeForce 210 video card: DVI/HDMI (using two DVI cables with a DVI-HDMI adapter), DVI/VGA (using two DVI cables with a DVI-VGA adapter), VGA/DVI (using two VGA cables with a VGA-DVI adapter), and VGA/HDMI (using two VGA cables with a VGA-HDMI adapter).

Issue #2 - Chimera Installation Won't "Stick": You may find that after running MultiBeast, the Chimera installation won't "stick" and the SATA hard drive cannot be booted without the use of the UniBeast USB flash drive. Basically, the cause is "advanced format" hard drives with 4K sector sizes (as opposed to 512B). If you have an "advanced format" hard drive (i.e. you didn't purchase the hard drive recommended in the components list above), you will need to do the following:

- Download the standalone Chimera installer from the downloads section.
- Extract the PKG file using the UnPKG application.
- Copy the extracted file "boot1h" to the root directory of the UniBeast USB flash drive.
- Restart the computer and press "F12" to boot from the UniBeast USB flash drive and run the OSX Lion installer.
- Once the installer has loaded, select your language, continue, and then agree.
- Select the "Utilities" top menu and open "Disk Utility".
- Unmount the OSX Lion partition (i.e. the SATA hard drive partition).
- Close "Disk Utility" and open "Terminal" from the same "Utilities" top menu.
- Type: dd if=boot1h of=/dev/rdisk0s2 and hit the "Enter" key.
- Close "Terminal" and shut down the computer.
- Remove the UniBeast USB flash drive and turn on the computer.
- Hopefully, the Chimera boot loader will now function correctly.
